It’s been a WHILE! Now that baby boy is almost 6 months old I’m finally starting to get a bit of my crafting mojo back, phew! Starting with…. these colorful and fun wall decals!
This is a super easy DIY that can brighten up any space, just in time for spring! When I was looking up wall decals to decorate the nursery I saw a few online, but they were either pricey or not exactly the colors I had in mind. I decided to do it myself using both an adhesive vinyl sheet that you can find at your local craft store, and washi tape.
You can find this material in your local craft store for only a few dollar per sheet. it is available in different colors and finishes, from matte to shiny and even glittery! It is basically a giant sticker that is safe to use on wall surfaces. Normally these adhesive vinyl sheets are used with a cutting machine to precisely cut out designs, but you can cut your own by hand!
Shapes– I decided to go with triangles, and since I was going for a fun confetti look it was ok that they were all a little different. If you prefer a more uniform look, definitely trace out your shapes before cutting. The easiest shapes to cut are triangles, squares, and diamonds. If you go with a more curvy shape like circles (for polka dots walls) or hearts, you may consider investing in a craft punch that can quickly punch out uniform shapes for you.
First, cut out your sheet into strips. Some sheets have a grid pattern on the back to make it easier to get a straight line, or you can use a ruler if you prefer. Then, zig zag cut along the strip to form your triangles. See, told you it was easy!
This collectible supply is a crafting must have that most people already have in their stash. If you do, then this project will cost you nothing! However if you have a specific color or pattern in mind for your wall stickers you may need to pick up another roll. And don’t call me “enabler”!
On a piece of parchment paper, lay out strips of washi tape so that their edges sightly overlap. This way, you are creating your own giant sticker! If your tape has a repeating pattern pay attention to line it up so that it looks continuous. Make sure to press down along the edges so that there are no gaps.
Pick up your washi sticker and cut out your shapes! A bit more work but still super easy!
Sticking to the wall:
Arrange these wall decals on your wall in any way you like- a dense cluster along the corner, perfectly lined up and staggered, or as random or specific as you like! You may want to give your wall a quick wipe down before starting to make sure there is no dust, this will help your wall decals stick better. Make sure to apply pressure with your fingers along the corners, as that is the most likely spot to lift. I have had these on my nursery walls for about 8 months now and so far they are holding up great! The only time you may see lifting is if there are extreme temperature or humidity shifts in the room.
These are a lot of fun to add color and personality to any room, but especially great for dorm rooms or renters as they are easily removable and do not damage the walls.
I hope you try this fun DIY! If you do, please snap a picture and tag me on instagram @throneandthimble so that I can admire your creation! 🙂
